The Borders...

Travel over the rolling Lammermuir hills and Southern Uplands, south of Edinburgh, through picturesque woodland and river valleys to discover the many charming market towns of the Scottish Borders, such as Lauder, Selkirk, Peebles and Hawick. This area has been synonymous with textiles and weaving for around 800 years. Your guide can explain the connection between the wool industry and the Cistercian monks of Melrose Abbey and you may want to continue your journey to discover the varied history and architecture of the other 12th century Abbeys at Dryburgh, Kelso and Jedburgh.

Floors castle, the home of the Duke of Roxburgh, is probably our largest inhabited castle and you will be captured by Thirlestane’s magnificent architecture and collection of paintings. Stately homes pepper the region and include Mellerstain, Paxton, Bowhill and Monteviot. Abbotsford House is notable as the “conundrum castle” home of Sir Walter Scott and Traquair is Scotland’s oldest inhabited house. Lived in for over 900 years and originally built as a hunting lodge for Scotland’s Kings and Queens.

Historically this area has been a land of turmoil and strife, home to the Reivers. We can unravel the past and showcase the best the Scottish Borders has to offer.

Loch Lomond & the Brooch of Scotland

Less than an hour’s drive from the centre of Glasgow and under 2 hours from Edinburgh, Loch Lomond is arguably one of Scotland’s most scenic lochs. Visit the conservation village of Luss, take a boat trip on the loch, or simply sit and admire the view.  Not far from Loch Lomond lies the area known as The Trossachs, made famous in Sir Walter Scott’s epic poem The Lady of the Lake, and offering a first glimpse of the mountain scenery for which Scotland is renowned.

Alternatively, you could head for Stirling, one-time capital of Scotland.  Stirling Castle was at the centre of many of the battles during the Wars of Independence in the 13th/14th centuries and later became one of the showpieces of the Stewart dynasty.

The Royal Kingdom of Fife

Begin with a stop in South Queensferry for spectacular views of the Forth bridges, before heading across the newly opened bridge to Fife. See the fishing villages of the East Neuk before visiting St Andrews. This wee town is not only the home of golf, but also Scotland’s first university and the ruins of what was the largest cathedral. If time allows; visit Falkland village (used for filming Inverness in Outlander) and also home to a real tennis court used by Mary Queen of Scots.
